Jenifer Kent

A "dense distillation of sensory experience is echoed by Jenifer Kent's obsessive ink-on-clayboard drawing.." -Julia Couzens, Square Cylinder

Statement

The symmetry of my work would suggest a mechanical approach using rulers and grids, but my drawings are done freehand, evolving organically, each according to its own cadence. Each mark exists as evidence of a distinct and patient process, an incremental accumulation that requires minute attention to detail and leaves little room for error in an iterative and meditative process. Drawing acceleration and movement, I slow down and mark time.

I examine the mechanisms of time, nature, space, and sound. Using black ink on a clay coated surface I hand-draw lines that coalesce into a field or form. The shapes mirror microscopic and cosmic landscapes, zooming in to suggest cellular structures and then out again, into hyperspace. These drawings are never still, though they seek to capture a moment in time, a suspension of sound, a paused chaos.

My influences include minimalist artists such as Sol Lewitt and Agnes Martin, the drawings of Van Gogh, the music of Morton Feldman.
